Bell & Associates, Inc. has been engaged to help our client find their next Director of Safety. This person will provide direction, design, development, implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive and effective safety program designed to protect the employees, physical assets and environment of the organization. This person must be accessible, reliable and possess all required skills to create a safety first culture.
Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state and local statutes, rules and regulations regarding employee safety and health issues through written safety programs and policies, training programs, and recordkeeping systems.
Provides recommendations to management regarding appropriate actions required to mitigate identified risk exposures.
Interfaces with Title Manager on DOT issues.
Develops and implements a sustainable and comprehensive safety and health process/system for assigned facilities.
Facilitates the Safety Committee, including audit, training, communications, and incident investigation subcommittees.
Researches, evaluates, develops and implements a broad range of safety policies, programs, and procedures.
Performs and coordinates periodic safety audits and inspections of all company locations to include facilities, vehicles, equipment, contractor projects and construction sites to identify potential loss exposures.
Makes specific and appropriate recommendations regarding any areas of improvement in the program to protect company interests.
Develops, coordinates, and provides a broad range of safety training programs.
Provides specialized training, such as accident investigation, back injury prevention, ergonomics, respiratory protection, heat stress, hazard communications, forklift, aerial lift and confined space entry, targeting employee groups or individual job tasks with identified inherent or unusual risks.
Reviews incident-related reports; performs investigation of incidents involving all company employees and equipment/facilities to determine root cause of accidents and recommends appropriate corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Coordinates and performs industrial hygiene testing when required, such as noise, toxic fumes, etc.
Researches, evaluates and recommends the use of safety equipment for specified hazards.
Serves as a professional resource and provides guidance to all departments within the organization to ensure achievement and success of program objectives and goals.
Responds to serious accidents and incidents after normal work hours.
Performs and evaluates audits with all levels of management.
Licensed with State of Missouri to manage all W/C cases and recovery.
Ability to learn.
5+ years of related experience and training; or equivalent combination of education and experience involving professional safety-related experience, including specific experience and verifiable success in safety program development, loss analysis, recordkeeping and training.
Maritime related safety experience a plus.
Bachelor s degree in Safety/Industrial engineering, Business Administration or a related field.
Must have knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database and other software.
Work requires continual attention to detail in establishing priorities and meeting deadlines.
Must have the ability to remain abreast of best practices, current issues and developments in occupational health and safety management.
Must have the ability to work independently and prepare staff level recommendations and presentations.
Must possess excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills to effectively interact, negotiate and exercise discretion while utilizing diplomacy when dealing with internal and external customers and management.
Must possess excellent analytical skills and a strong working knowledge of statistical methods.
Must have the ability to work effectively in a diverse group.
Must have the ability to act as a managerial consultant/advisor on professional and technical issues within their area of expertise, with a view towards reaching strategic conclusions.
Must be able to conduct safety-related inspections/audits, investigations and determine loss analysis.
Must have the ability to interpret and apply safety and environmental laws, regulations and codes.
Must be capable of performing acceptable sampling and analytical methods used in basic industrial hygiene and the ability to properly operate safety related test equipment.
Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card and PHA Escort badge within ninety (90) days of employment.
Occupational Health and Safety Technician (OHST), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.
